Carl Orff's most famous work, Carmina Burana celebrates life, love, dancing, drinking and hedonism – but always with an eye on the role of fate. Based on 24 mediaeval Latin poems whose carefree spirit contrasts vividly with traditional concepts of life and death in the Middle Ages, this sweeping and powerful cantata for large-scale chorus, orchestra and soloists was a huge success at its 1937 premiere. Its worldwide popularity since then has made it a firm favourite with both singers and audiences alike.
The dramatic pivotal movement, O Fortuna, is one of the best-known choral pieces ever written. Epitomising Fortune's turning wheel, with its mixture of laughter and sadness, hope and despair, appropriately it both opens and closes the work. In between is a joyful celebration of earthly pleasures, with dances welcoming the arrival of spring, comic and drinking songs from the tavern, and a series of lyrics about love and lust that start demurely and become ever more boisterous, before the final reminder that the Wheel of Fate continues its eternal rotation.
A masterpiece of rhythmic invention and brilliant orchestration, Carmina Burana uses rousing choruses, demanding solos and instantly-memorable melodies to extol the pleasures and pitfalls of life whilst reminding us of the fickleness of fortune and wealth.
The Russian State Symphony Orchestra acclaimed as one of the most prominent orchestral bodies of its country, has developed over the years an intense local and international activity, performing in major concert halls in Spain and Europe, playing a vast and diverse repertoire.
